SAFE: An Innovative Project for a Sustainable Future in Equestrianism

In today’s context, sustainability and environmental health are increasingly important topics, not only for human life but also for animals and the entire ecosystem. It is with this spirit that Scuderia 1918 has embraced the concept of “One Health“, an integrated approach that considers the health of the environment, animals, and humans as inseparable. In line with this philosophy, the SAFE project was born, a pioneering initiative led by a pioneering initiative carried out by Scuderia 1918 in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Turin, combining research, technology, and sustainability to improve the grounds used for equestrian activities. The research project is carried out through a waterfall call promoted by the NODES ecosystem that is part of the European Union’s PNRR projects.

SAFE: The Innovation of Techno-Soils for the Well-Being of Horses and Riders

One of the main objectives of the SAFE project is the creation of sustainable techno-soils for footing, the surfaces on which equestrian activities take place. Traditionally, these surfaces are made from raw materials such as sand or other non-renewable resources and require large amounts of water to maintain their efficiency over time. In addition to representing a significant environmental impact, these surfaces can negatively affect animal health and well-being, leading to issues such as lameness or respiratory illnesses.

In collaboration with experts in veterinary science, earth sciences, chemistry, and agronomy from the University of Turin, the SAFE project is conducting studies on innovative techno-soils derived from recovered products through industrial processes that treat mineral waste (from excavation and demolition, quarry operations, and other mining activities). The goal is to reduce water consumption for their maintenance. Health and Safety Monitoring: A Central Commitment

Currently, the study focuses on monitoring the soil’s ability to retain moisture and its impact on horse health, following the five criteria established by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI), which include aspects such as safety, comfort, and performance. In parallel, air quality for riders is measured, assessing the presence of respirable particulate matter and the respirable fraction of silica.

Tools Used

To ensure the safety and effectiveness of the SAFE techno-soils, a “traction tester” weighing around 35 kg is used. This tool simulates a horse’s limb to test essential characteristics such as shock absorption, elasticity, and grip. The instrument is equipped with either a traditional iron horseshoe used in show jumping (i.e., iron) or one made of plastic material (i.e., anti-shock polyurethane) and is dropped from a specific height to simulate real impact.

A cone penetrometer is used to evaluate impact resistance, specifically the hardness of the tested surface. These tests help better understand the interaction between the horse and the ground, offering solutions that maximize comfort and safety.
