Tobago Z: Horse of The Month

There’s been no stopping Daniel Deusser’s chestnut stallion as he’s led the way in Europe during the indoor season

Daniel Deusser heads to next month’s Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ as one of the favourites after finishing top of the Western European League qualifying table.

The German rider made history by winning three legs on two different horses, Calisto Blue and Tobago Z. Deusser won in Verona last October, Madrid in November and this year in February, in Bordeaux.

Initially Deusser had a dilemma…which of his two superstar horses to take to the final in April. However, after winning two of the legs in Madrid and Bordeaux on the same horse, it would be very hard to look beyond Tobago Z.

Tobago Z is a striking chestnut stallion

He showed his quality when he came out on top in a 10-horse jump off in Madrid, and later in the season was again in first place in Bordeaux as he navigated the toughest of courses.
After Madrid, Daniel said: “Tobago is very careful and very scopey, and he’s not a hot horse so that really helps in the jump-off because he never rushes even when he’s under pressure – you get the same jump whether you are going fast or slow.

“Tobago has developed very well this year and is showing a lot of promise for the future…You ride your best at the final!”
Tobago Z certainly seems to tick that box. Deusser is going for a second Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ series title so he knows what it takes to succeed.
He said of Tobago Z: “He’ll have four weeks off now and then I’ll take him to ’s-Hertogenbosch for a last run before the Final. It’s not an advantage to go to Gothenburg as the Western European League leader, but it’s a really good feeling all the same.”

Quite simply Tobago Z is thrilling to watch. The stallion displays effortless efficiency, shaving seconds off the clock and no matter where in the jump off order he goes, he’s shown that he’s the one to beat.
Tobago Z is owned by Stephex Stables a family-owned company based in Belgium. Stephex Stables trades in equine excellence, whether it’s stallion services, transportation or event organisation and hospitality.
Quite rightly, they think very highly of Tobago Z who has impeccable performance breeding. They have, for sale, frozen semen from the chestnut stallion.
His dam Whoopie C was a top-flight Belgian show jumper and his sire, Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve is described as having exceptional progeny in bone and beauty.

Speaking about Tobago Z, Stephex Stables said: “A stallion can only pass on what he has himself and Tobago Z has it all! When genetics predict results and results confirm genetics, the circle is complete with Tobago Z.”

Tobago Z’s progeny are expected to follow suit and it’s exciting to see what they achieve in the years ahead.

For now, the spotlight is on Tobago Z who is one of the top performing Jumping stallions in the world

In 2018 Tobago Z was one of the most prolific horses on the circuit – winning numerous five-star events and hundreds of thousands of Euros in prize money.
Deusser took over the ride on the stallion in July 2016 when Tobago Z was eight. In his first two FEI affiliated competitions, Tobago Z was competed by Belgian rider Jonas Bellemans.
The partnership with Deusser is a long established one now. All eyes will be looking forward to Gothenburg, as the pair will be the ones to beat, again.
